Choosing the right type of boiler to suit your needs and wants is one of the most important aspects of replacing your existing gas appliance, as not all boilers do the same thing.
Open Vented Boiler
An Open Vented Boiler is a boiler most suited to larger properties, with a demand for hot water at a simletaneous time (for example Morning – bath/shower by more than one person, and Evening – Bath/Shower). This type of boiler heats a cylinder of hot water (large copper tank, in an airingcupboard). This type of system and boiler should only be used on larger properties where the demand for heat water is more likely at a simeltanious time, due to the storage of a large hot water tank. This type of system relies on space for extra expanssion tanks, cylinder controls, additional pipework etc.
System Boiler
Now there are two types of ‘System Boiler’ ‘Vented System’ and ‘Sealed System’. A ‘Vented System Boiler’ is a very simiular type of boiler to an ‘Open Vented Boiler’, where it is based on the same principle of ‘Stored Hot Water’. However this type of boiler means that you do not need as many tanks and major componants as you do for an ‘Open Vented Boiler’, as some are built in, however this type of boiler still requires a cylinder and expanssion tank in the loft or compartment. A ‘Sealed System’ however differs as it would not require an additional Expanssion Tank, as this is already installed convieniently within the boiler already.

Combination Boiler (Combi)
Combination boilers are exactly as the sound, they are are single unit appliance usually housed in the kitchen, (some combis fit in kitchen cupboards) or in the airing cupboard, that combine the control of hot water and central heating supply in one location. This type of appliance is suitable for smaller properties, having said that some combi boilers are powerful enough to easily deal with a four bedroom, 1 bathroom detached family home demands. Good cold water pressure and flow is needed for a combination boiler to be really efficient.
The Next Generation of Boilers…….
Combi Store Boilers
Out on the market now are Combi Store Boilers, that are a combination of the storage cylinder and the boiler all house in a single location. This type of boiler is suited to a typical 4 bedroom detached family home, with 2 bathrooms and an ensuite. Diasadvantages of this type are boiler is that is bigger than a traditional ‘Combi Boiler’. However this type boiler needs much less space than a traditional system of open vented boiler and is just as powerful.
Micro CHP Boilers
Rumour has it that these boilers will generate electricity by using the the enternal movements of a boiler. These boilers are very expensive, however there are additional rebates and such from the Govenment.
